A team of students from the Roslyn High School Robotics Club participated in their first VEX Robotics competition “In the Zone” hosted by Adelphi University last weekend.

There were 31 teams representing area high schools, sponsored by local universities such as Adelphi University and NYIT.

In preparation for the competition, the students collaborated on a final design, and built and programmed a robot. They had many innovative ideas and executed their ideas through communication and a major commitment of time.

Along with the robots’ ability to complete the tasks required by the contest, students were also judged on the content of a comprehensive engineering notebook and the manner in which they answered a series of questions presented by a panel of professional engineers, who acted as judges.

The level of energy within the facility was much like a professional sporting event. In its first competition, Roslyn placed 13th out of 31 teams, and because of the consistency and skills of the robot, the team was chosen as an alliance team member for one of the finalists of the entire competition.

Team members learned a great deal and are excited to apply this knowledge as they go forward.

Participating students were Helayne Drell, Joshua Flashner, Daniel Flyer, Ali Hosseinipour, Patty Inroon, Samuel Kaplan, Yujin (Eugene) Kim, Melanie Landesberg, Harris Miller and Maxwell Sun. Faculty advisors for the Robotics Club are Olivia Kaplan and Lisa Spyridon.
