As part of the nation’s Women’s History Month celebrations, each Nassau County Legislator selects a woman of distinction within their respective districts. These women have all gone above and beyond the norm, whether with regard to volunteerism or within their respective professions, usually both.

This year, Nassau County Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton (D-Glen Cove) selected Josephine Greco Pedone for her tireless devotion to the Nicholas Pedone Foundation, a childhood cancer organization she started after losing her son to cancer.

After losing her only child, Nicholas, to this disease, Greco Pedone was determined to make a difference. A lifelong resident of Glen Cove, she had tremendous support from her family and friends. The Foundation helps deliver smiles in many different ways to courageous kids fighting cancer and encourages them to always “Fight Hard Smile Big” and never give up.

“For many years now I have watched the Pedone family and, like many other Glen Covers, found a place in my heart for them. Josephine and Nick endured the worst that any parents possibly could by losing their only child to cancer,” DeRiggi-Whitton said. “Yet, because of their incredible strength and faith, they have emerged as people that spend their time doing for others. Josephine has kept her son’s legacy alive by helping other children who are fighting cancer. Her love and ability to remain positive is truly something I respect so much. I am honored to have her as my trailblazer.”

Greco Pedone felt very honored to share the Trailblazer stage with some incredible women who continue to make a difference and give back to their communities and impact lives in such a positive way. One of her favorite quotes is by Mother Teresa: “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.”
