Williston Park roadwork project underway

Construction began last week on a $2.26 million project to repair approximately two miles of roads in the Village of Williston Park.

At Monday night’s village board meeting, Keith Bunnell, superintendent of the village Department of Public Works, reported the roadwork is proceeding smoothly.

“The contractor’s doing a nice job so far,” Bunnell said of Port Washington-based Reet Constructing Corp.

He said work on concrete roadbeds and curbs started on Pennsylvania, Custer and Shields streets.

“We’re doing roadwork and we’re doing some bonding,” said Village of Williston Park Mayor Paul Ehrbar.

Village trustees had voted to issue $2 million in bonds for the roads project at their regular board meeting in July. The board is also using approximately $225,000 from the state Consolidated Highway Improvement Program for the project.

Bunnell said Orchid Sewer & Water is simultaneously starting to replace lead water pipes on streets to be repaired. The village board awarded the company a $100,000 contract to do that work.

The board selected Reet on the recommendation of Kenneth Pritchard, vice president of Dvirka & Bartolucci Consulting Engineers, which has been retained for engineering on the project.

Reet will be repairing both asphalt-based and concrete-based roads in the project, Pritchard said. The asphalt roads are in the western and southern areas of the village. The concrete-based roads are in the eastern half of the village. For the asphalt roads, he said Reet will employ a “mix in place” technique of grinding eight or nine inches of the road surface and mixing that asphalt and underlying sand into the new road surface.

The contractor will have 120 days to complete the work from the time it receives notice to proceed on the project next week, Pritchard said. He said village streets scheduled for repairs are those in greatest need of upgrades.

In other developments:

• At the recommendation of the New York Conference of Mayors, Ehrbar issued a proclamation declaring October Anti-bullying Awareness Month in the village. His proclamation is meant to coincide with the same observance during October in school districts statewide.

• Village Trustee Teresa Thomann said the Williston Park Civic Association will hold a candidates night forum on Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. Thomann said the Williston Park Civic Association is attempting to bring the neighboring Albertson Civic Association in on the event. The location of the candidates night is not yet determined.

• Ehrbar said Nassau County Clerk Maureen O’Connell will sponsor an event for residents to receive flu shots at American Legion Post 144 on Oct. 3 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

•Thomann said the Williston Park Library had received a $15,000 grant through state Sen. Jack Martins (R-Mineola). She said the funds will be used to purchase new furniture for the library’s children’s room and second language materials.

• Deputy Mayor Kevin Rynne said foursomes are still welcome to sign up for an upcoming village Recreation Committee golf outing at the Clearview Golf Course on Oct. 11.
