The science olympiad team at Roslyn High School have made the state finals of the Science Olympiad Competition for the third year in a row.

The medalists include Parker Miller, Jonah Hendler, Dean Oken, Ellie Eisenberg, Kamyar Ghiam, Anuj Gupta, Timothy Chen, Adam Robbins, Tawny Sit, Josh Kuperman, Bowen Yu, Shawn Anand, Justin Leu, Holly Kim, and Christine Om.

“I can’t believe we’re going to states,” said Hendler, a second place medalist. “All our work has been leading up to this point, and I’m excited for our five-hour bus ride to take on teams from across the whole state.”

The team advanced to the state competitions to be held in Le Moyne College in Syracuse after competing at the Kellenberg Memorial Regional Science Olympiad competition on Feb. 6.

The top placing team at the state finals will advance to the national competition.

William Marvin, a science teacher at Roslyn who spearheads the engineering program, praised the students’ preparation and dedication towards the annual science competition.

“They truly deserve this honor and will work even harder to hopefully have a chance to move on to the national level this March,” he said.

Under the direction of the captains and junior captains, students study and create different designs in advance for their respective events in order to have a chance of coming up on top in the competitions.

Sit, who was a member of the team that qualified for last year’s state finals, said she barely got any sleep preparing for the competition.

“I stayed up all night the day before the competitions,” she said. “I got about an hour of sleep.”

The team qualified for the regional competition after a good showing at the Islip Invitational competition in December winning multiple medals.

The Science Olympiad Club at Roslyn High is a nationally recognized club where students meet weekly to prepare to compete in more than 23 science-related events, including written tests, spontaneous problem solving, and building events.
