My name is Byron A. Divins Jr., and I am running for the assembly seat in the 16th district.
By way of introduction, I grew up in Roslyn and am a product of the Roslyn Public School system, having graduated high school in 1988. This past August, I celebrated my thirtieth reunion. I graduated from the State University of New York at Albany with a B.A. in Economics and received my law degree from Touro Law Center in 1996.
Upon graduation from law school, I joined the United States Navy. My career spanned 20 years were I served overseas in Japan, two middle east tours along with sea tours on the USS KITTY HAWK (CV 63) and USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN 71).
In addition to my overseas and sea tours, I have served in Washington D.C. with the Department of Defense Office of General Counsel; Groton, Conn.; Pensacola, Fla; and Millington, Tenn.
My career introduced me to people from all over the world as well our nation. This experience taught me to work with people from all backgrounds and beliefs while focusing on the problems which needed addressing.
My naval career consisted of 13 years of active duty and the remainder in the reserves. As a reservist, the first decision I made was where to live. I choose return home to Roslyn to raise—with my wife—our two boys. They are both now in the Roslyn school system. My wife and I opened Divins & Divins, P.C., a law firm in Garden City.
With my military career behind me, I am now looking to continue serving as an assemblyman in the 16th district. We have significant challenges which need addressing. School safety and education is top on my list. Next is ensuring that the two percent property tax limit is made permanent. Taxes on Long Island have caused many of my high classmates to leave our county to seek a more affordable place to live.
This must be addressed. Of course, if our children and families do not have a safe place to live with a clean environment, remaining in Long Island becomes less attractive.
We have to ensure that our access to unsoiled water is not compromised and that the water we do have remains uncontaminated and safe to utilize. It is important that we all work together to maintain the beautiful beaches and parks for future generations.
There is a lot of work to be done.
