Volunteers are wanted for a Hempstead Plains habitat restoration project behind the Wheatley School on Sunday, Sept. 24, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Volunteers will meet in the Wheatley student parking lot (by the red doors) at 11 Bacon Road in Old Westbury.
The Hempstead Plains was a prairie that stretched from Queens to Suffolk and from Jericho Turnpike to Hempstead Turnpike. There are now only 60 acres left, making it a critically imperiled ecosystem.
This flat grassland literally changed world history through early horse racing, aviation and suburbia and has important ecological significance.
Wheatley is lucky to have a small remnant in the Wheatley Woods behind the school that needs help.
Help the Wheatley Environmental Action Committee restore the remnant of the Hempstead Plains.
Dress for outdoor field work: long sleeves, long pants, socks, and sturdy shoes.
Some work gloves and tools will be provided.
