Thank you to the Community for Donating Blood

The Great Neck Library family is grateful to community members who rolled up their sleeves to donate blood at the Great Neck Library/Long Island Blood Services Community Blood Drive on Thursday, July 19. Eighty-two units of life-saving blood were donated, especially needed at this time of a blood shortage emergency. Thank you to all for your help and caring for those who are in desperate need of blood.

Great Neck Library Staff Excellence Award

Jennifer Ransom was the recipient of the Great Neck Library Staff Excellence Award for June 2018. Jennifer was recognized for her superior dedication, positive attitude and outstanding service to the Great Neck Library patrons.

Independent Nomination Petitions Being Accepted

In accordance with the Bylaws of the Great Neck Library, the deadline for filing of petitions for independent nominations for expiring seats on the Board of Trustees and Nominating Committee is Aug. 15, 2018. Petition forms are available in the Director’s Office during regular business hours. Biographical information for all candidates will appear in the October-December issue of the Library Newsletter and online at www.greatnecklibrary.org.
The Nominating Committee has endorsed the candidates, as follows, to fill four seats on the Library Board of Trustees and three seats on the Nominating Committee that will be expiring in January 2019.

Board of Trustees: Four-year term, January 2019-2023 for the seat currently held by Robert Schaufeld – Nominating Committee Endorsed Candidate: Liman Mimi Hu. Four-year term, January 2019-2023 for the seat currently held by Joel Marcus – Nominating Committee Endorsed Candidate: David Zielenziger. Remaining two-year term, January 2019-2021 for Doug Hwee’s seat – Nominating Committee Endorsed Candidate: Josie Pizer. Remaining one-year term, January 2019-2020 for Francine Ferrante Krupski’s seat – Nominating Committee Endorsed Candidate: Scott Sontag.

Performance Poets Readings at Station

Join this monthly open mic poetry forum hosted by George Pafitis in collaboration with the Performance Poets Association. The next reading will be held on Saturday, Aug. 4 at 1 p.m. at the Station Branch, 26 Great Neck Road, on the second level above Best Market. Participate in reading your own work and/or listen and support others. A featured poet will read for 20 minutes at each session, followed by an open-mic. Open to all.

Meet author and wildlife photographer John P. Cardone when he speaks about and signs copies of his book, The Healing Power of Nature: A Practical Exploration of How Nature Can Influence Our Health and Well-Being on Monday, Aug. 6 at 7 p.m. in the Community Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue.

John calls on over 30 years as a patient and health education video producer, his own fight with illness, and his years as a lover of the outdoors, while presenting scientific facts. John’s photography will be on display in the Main Library’s Gallery during the month of August.

Eddie and Jean Costello’s Antiques Road Show at Main

Learn how to identify today’s hottest antiques and collectibles at Eddie and Jean Costello’s Trash or Treasure Antiques Road Show on Tuesday, Aug. 7 at 2 p.m. in the Community Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue. Free appraisal of any one item to the first 40 registered patrons.

Understanding Immigration Reform at Parkville

Presenter Treasa Kalliath works to find legal solutions for those immigrants who are struggling to find a legal footing in the U.S., and will share her knowledge and perspectives on the current state of immigration on Tuesday, Aug. 7 at 7 p.m. at the Parkville Branch, 10 Campbell Street,  just off Lakeville Road, New Hyde Park 11040.

Treasa is a solo practitioner in U.S. Immigration and Nationality Law, and has a practice in Hicksville, NY. She is affiliated with three Immigration Law firms in New York for whom she handles various immigration related services.

Summer Community Service for Teens

Volunteer this summer and make a difference for local community organizations. Earn community service by participating in craft and writing projects for a variety of interests and abilities. Your service will impact youth, families, veterans, pets, and more. Upcoming volunteer dates are Wednesdays, Aug. 8, 15, 22, and 29. Come as often or as little as you would like. Mindfulness Meditation facilitated by Carolyn Carpentiere at Main

Join Carolyn Carpentiere for Mindfulness Meditation on Wednesday, Aug. 8 at 7:15 p.m. in the Community Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue. Meditation is a practice that strengthens our focus and attention, as well as releases stress to stay healthy. Open to all skill levels. Bring a mat or use a library chair that will be available.

Carolyn received her 200 hour yoga certification at Long Island Yoga School in 2009 and has continued to work in and study many other holistic solutions to health including Mindfulness Meditation and Reiki.

In order to access this service, Library District residents can log on to cancellations.com, type in their zip code or Great Neck Library and obtain information on program cancellations or Library closings. In addition, at no charge, residents can request automatic e-mails from cancellations.com when the Library has posted any information. This is a way for Library District residents who are connected online to be advised of weather related changes in Library hours or programs.
