Community Blood Drive at Main
Heroes are wanted. Please give blood and save a life by participating in the Great Neck Library and LI Blood Services Community Blood Drive on Thursday, Feb. 1 from 1:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Community Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue, Great Neck 11023.
Donors must bring a donor card or identification with a photo or signature, be between 16 and 75 years old, at least 110 pounds, drink and eat well before donating, and have not got new tattoos within the past 12 months. 16-year-olds need parental consent, while anyone 76 and older can donate if they provide a doctor’s note.

New York Blood Center (NYBC) is one of the largest independent, community-based, nonprofit blood centers in the United States. Each year, NYBC provides approximately one million blood products to hundreds of hospitals in the Northeast, helping save the lives of cancer and surgery patients, accident and burn victims, AIDS and sickle cell anemia patients, transplant recipients, people with hemophilia, and many others.
Board of Trustees Annual Reorganization Meeting at Main
The Board of Trustees Annual Reorganization meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the Large Multipurpose Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue.
The Annual Reorganization meeting provides an opportunity for the community to meet members of the Board of Trustees and Nominating Committee.
Board President Robert Schaufeld, Treasurer Marietta DiCamillo and Interim Library Director Tracy Geiser will present their reports for the 2017 year and set meeting dates for 2018/2019. Dr. Barry Smith and Weihua Yan, elected in the Library’s October 2017 Annual Election, will take their seats as members of the Board of Trustees. Sam Gottlieb and Cheng Carey Ye, elected to fill two expiring seats on the Nominating Committee, will take their seats. The Board will also appoint two Association members to serve on the Nominating Committee.

Asian Brush Painting Exhibit Opening Reception
All are invited to the opening reception of the Long Island Sumi-e Society “Fragrance of Ink” Asian Brush Painting Exhibit on Sunday, Jan. 28 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. in the Lower Level Gallery of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue. Inclement weather date is Feb 4.
The Fragrance of Ink is the Long Island Chapter of the Sumi-e Society, the New York local affiliate of the National Organization, the Sumi-e Society of America. This chapter was founded by Sungsook Setton in 1998. These artists strive to capture the essence and spirit of the subjects in their paintings.
The exhibit will be on view until Feb. 27.
Drumming Away Stress with Robert Lawrence Friedman at Main
Join this unique and powerful, yet playful stress management program that combines energetic, percussive drumming with calming guided imagery exercises to provide a lasting and powerful release of stress on Sunday, Jan. 28 at 2:00 p.m. in the Community Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue.
Drums have been used for centuries for ceremonies, healing and building community. This program explores the new science of drumming and wellness. Recent clinical research validates that hand drumming reduces stress and improves the immune system.
Robert Lawrence Friedman, MA, author of The Healing Power of the Drum, will teach specific and clinically-proven exercises using rhythm instruments and hand drums to release internalized stress and increase energy. No knowledge of drumming necessary. All drums provided.
Property Assessment Grievance Workshop at Main presented by Charles Berman, TONH Receiver of Taxes
Join Charles Berman, the Town of North Hempstead’s receiver of taxes, when he presents a property assessment grievance workshop on Tuesday, Jan. 30 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Community Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue.
Mr. Berman will review the assessment process, explain how to fill out the grievance application, and provide tips on filling out the application. Staff members will be on hand with applications for your convenience. Please bring your 2019-2020 Notice of Tentative Assessed Value, sent to you in early January 2018 from the Nassau County Department of Assessment.
You do not need to use an attorney to file a grievance. It takes only a few minutes to complete the Application for Correction of Property Tax Assessment. The filing period is Jan. 2 – March 1, 2018 with the Nassau County Assessment Review Commission.
