Performance Poets Association Readings at Station

Join George Pafitis when he hosts Performance Poets Association Readings on Saturday, Jan. 5 from, 1 to 3:00 p.m., at the Station Branch, 26 Great Neck Road (2nd level), Gardens at Great Neck Plaza, above Best Market.

This is a monthly Open Mic forum in collaboration with the Performance Poets Association. Participate in reading your own work and/or listen and support others. A featured poet will read for 20 minutes at each session, followed by an open-mic. Performance Poets Association is a non-profit organization that provides a forum for local artists and brings original poetry and related arts to the public.

AARP Smart DriverTEK Workshop presented by Alan Lichtenthal at Main

AARP volunteer Alan Lichtenthal will present a free AARP Smart DriverTEK workshop on Monday, Jan. 7 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the community room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Ave.

Technology is changing the driving experience. AARP Driver Safety has teamed up with The Hartford to develop a workshop to provide drivers with the necessary tools to navigate modern vehicle technology. Smart DriverTEK is a new educational program that helps drivers to understand current and evolving vehicle safety technologies, how to use them and to recognize how these technologies might enhance their driving safety and extend their safe driving years. Learn all about blind-spot detection systems, front-collision warning systems and more. No Fee.

GNL Tech Squad at Main

Learn how to use your iPad or tablet, social media, Microsoft Office, smartphone apps, and more in a small group setting on Tuesdays in January from 1 to 3:00 p.m. in the small multipurpose room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Ave. Bring in specific questions and issues, or just learn the basics of technology. Author Jacqueline Becker at Main: “Raging Against Aging”

Meet author Jacqueline Becker when she speaks about her book, “Raging Against Aging” on Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 2 p.m. in the community room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Ave.

With a humorous outlook, Becker takes on aging and its effects on every aspect of her life.
She is a retired teacher and private tutor for reading and writing. She has had over 20 articles appear in various publications. Books will be available for purchase and signing at the program.

The next Wednesday Matinee, about two vaudeville partners who reunite for a television special, will be shown on Wednesday, Jan. 9 at 2 p.m. at the Main Library, 159 Bayview Ave.

On Health and Healing facilitated by Librarian Mimi Rabizadeh at Main

Join librarian Mimi Rabizadeh as she discusses the latest research in medicine on the health of the “gut” and how it influences the brain, the immune system, and the overall health of individuals on Thursday, Jan. 10 at 12 p.m. in the large multipurpose room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Ave. Registration strongly suggested by calling 516-466-8055 ext. 218/219 or register online.

Finance Committee Meeting

The next regular meeting of the Great Neck Library Board of Trustees Finance Committee is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 10 at 7 p.m. in the small multipurpose room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Ave. All are welcome. Confirm with the library at 516-466-8055 that there has been no change in meeting date, time or location.

Project Independence Men’s Group at Parkville

Join the discussion when the Project Independence Men’s Group meets on Fridays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Parkville Branch, 10 Campbell St. (off Lakeville Road), New Hyde Park. The next meeting will be held on Jan. 11.

Great Neck Library Board of Trustees and Nominating Committee

The 2019 Library Election will be held on Oct. 28. There will be two seats expiring in January 2020 — one on the Board of Trustees (Scott Sontag) and one on the Nominating Committee (Patrick McDonnell).

Any nominee for a position on the Board of Trustees or the Nominating Committee must be a member of the Great Neck Library Association by the record date of Oct. 1, 2019.
All persons 18 years of age or older, who are residents of the Great Neck School District and are either valid library card holders or registered voters with the Nassau County Board of Elections, will be members of the Association.

Interested members should send a letter and résumé by Friday, May 24 to:

Library patrons connected to the Internet are asked to check the website: www.cancellations.com for library weather related closings/program cancellations.

In order to access this service, library district residents can log on to cancellations.com, type in their zip code or Great Neck Library and obtain information on program cancellations or library closings. In addition, at no charge, residents can request automatic e-mails from cancellations.com when the library has posted any information. This is a great way for library district residents who are connected online to be advised of weather related changes in library hours or programs.
