Annual Indian Powwow and more at the Queens Farm

The Island Now

The Queens County Farm Museum has a number of fun and educational events scheduled for this summer and into the fall as follows:

Watercolors on the Farm
Four sessions: Thursday, June 6, 13, 20, and 27, 1 to 4 p.m

Experiment in the medium of watercolor with the farm landscape as your backdrop. Local Queens artist Denis Ponsot will provide instruction and demo all the “shop tricks” in watercolor painting. Beginning and experienced students are welcome and will explore a variety of techniques with an emphasis on developing one’s own style. Demonstrations of color and design, wet-on-wet, and dry brush techniques will be included. Individual attention will be given. Note: A supply list will be distributed upon registration for the course. Fee: $160 per person; $155 per member.

Herbs for Your Daily Life
Saturday, June 22, 11 a.m.

Queens County Farm Museum cultivates 30 varieties of annual and perennial herbs. Their farmer and resident herbalist, Phoebe Greenberg, will discuss growing and using herbs for their medicinal benefits. The class will explore some of the properties of specific herbs grown on the farm and provide a variety of simple ways you can harness their healthful benefits in your very own kitchen. A walk around the farm will allow you to see the range of herbs that can be grown in this region. A hands-on activity is included, and all participants will take home a sample of herbs with fun recipes to try after class. Fee: $45 per person; $40 per member.

The 41st Annual Thunderbird Indian Powwow
Friday, July 26, 7 to 10 p.m., Saturday, July 27, 12 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m., and Sunday, July 28, 12 to 5 p.m.

New York City’s largest and most dynamic Powwow will feature three days of intertribal Native American dance competitions, with more than 40 Indian nations represented. Performances will include hoop dancers and sunset lightings of the bonfire, weather permitting. A large selection of authentic Native American art, crafts, jewelry and food will be available for sale.

Day passes are $10 for adults and $5 for children under the age of 12 in advance, and $15 for adults and $8 for children at the door.  Weekend passes are $16 for adults and $7 for children ages 12 and under.

Volunteer Days
Tuesdays and Sundays through Nov. 5, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

From spring through fall, individuals ages 18 and older are invited to work in the growing fields at Queens Farm. Tasks are often physically strenuous, so volunteers should wear proper outdoor work attire (hat, sunglasses, layers, rain gear, gloves, closed-toed shoes, etc.) and pack a water bottle. This is a great way to get some exercise, meet your neighbors, and enjoy the great outdoors. No advance registration is necessary. Note: The farm cannot accommodate groups on Volunteer Days at this time. Activities do not include hands-on work with their livestock.

Seasonal Farmstand
Wednesdays through Sundays until Nov. 3
Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 11 a.m. to 3p.m.; Saturdays and Sundays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Enjoy farm-fresh produce grown right here at Queens Farm from spring through fall. There are over 80 varieties of fruits, vegetables, flowers, and herbs are featured throughout the season. Members always get 10 percent off and EBT & SNAP benefits are accepted. The farm encourages visitors to BYOB (bring your own bags).
