Town receives ‘Trees for Tribs’ grant

The Island Now

Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the Town Board members have announced that the Town has received a grant award from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation in the amount of $37,500 to help replace the trees that were lost over six years ago during Superstorm Sandy.

“The addition of new trees to our local park is so important in order to protect our tributary and local environment. This grant from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation will go a long way to help protect our water quality for generations to come,” said Bosworth.

Manhasset Valley Park and the nearby Whitney Pond Park surround the same interconnected tributary which conveys runoff from the surrounding higher elevations into Manhasset Bay and the Long Island Sound. The goal of the “Trees for Tribs” program is to plant trees and shrubs near stream corridors to prevent erosion, improve the habitat for wildlife and, most importantly, improve water quality.

The money allocated for the grant will go toward the purchase of trees which will be planted along the tributary and remove harmful materials from entering into Manhasset Bay. It will also enable the Town to hire seasonal employees who will assist with preparing and maintaining the area surrounding the tributary.
