As part if its Lifelong Learning Program under the chairmanship of Paul Vagoda, Temple Judea recently invited New York state Assemblyman Anthony D’Urso to speak about his family’s experiences during the Holocaust.

At great risk to themselves, the D’Urso family had hidden two Jewish families from the Nazis in an Italian mountain hut, providing them with food and shelter for several months thereby saving their lives.

D’Urso was five years old at the time. This experience has had a lifelong influence on him. He has become active in applying for recognition from Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center in Jerusalem for his family’s role. This organization honors non-Jews who risked their lives to save Jews during the war as the “Righteous Among the Nations.”

The Temple congregants were inspired as they listened to D’Urso describe his family history and the immense courage that they had shown during those dangerous times.

Temple Judea is located at 333 Searingtown Road in Manhasset. For more information, contact 516-621-8049 or go to www.temple-judea.com. New members are always welcome.
