Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth attended a work session held by the Western Nassau County Aquifer Committee July 22. The committee, which is led by Residents Forward Executive Director Mindy Germain and comprised of local elected officials, water suppliers, scientists, and civic groups, discussed a variety of topics including policy goals and upcoming sustainability projects.
“From day one, my administration has made protection of our drinking water and our waterways a priority,” said Bosworth. “The Western Nassau County Aquifer Committee is an excellent forum for exchanging innovative ideas and proves that collaboration between local government and residents is an effective tool to effect change. I look forward to continuing our work together.”
Bosworth highlighted a North Hempstead capital project that will involve the capturing of stormwater runoff from the Harbor Links Golf Course and from the capped landfills behind the Solid Waste Management Authority. The runoff will be funneled to retention ponds to irrigate the golf course, saving between 35 million and 75 million gallons of water.
The committee laid out a set of 12 policy recommendations in a letter sent to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, with a stated goal of a permanent resource management plan put in place by 2022.
