New York State United Teachers (NYUT), representing its affiliates the American Federation of Teachers and National Education Association, has issued another round of endorsements for the primary election on June 23 and subsequent elections in November, with U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove) among the chosen.

NYSUT President Andy Pallotta said in a statement that public schools as cornerstones of communities were clearer “now more than ever.”

“We need representatives across New York who recognize that and will fight for public education in the halls of power,” Pallotta said. “We are confident that the dozens of candidates we’ve endorsed already this election cycle are the types of leaders who can deliver for New Yorkers. Especially amid this global pandemic, support for policies and funding that will move public education forward is critical as our educators work doubly hard to provide educational services and other essential resources for students and families.”

NYSUT-endorsed candidates receive “grassroots support” from the organization, including phone banking, door knocking and literature distribution. The union also makes financial contributions from voluntary donations through VOTE-COPE, the union’s nonpartisan political action committee.

The organization has not yet revealed its endorsements in the races for the 4th Congressional District, currently represented by Rep. Kathleen Rice (D-Garden City), State Assembly District 19, currently represented by Assemblyman Ed Ra (R-Franklin Square), or State Assembly District 16, being vacated this year by Assemblyman Anthony D’Urso (D-New Hyde Park), with Democratic nominee Gina Sillitti of Manorhaven and Republican candidate Ragini Srivastava of Manhasset Hills set to vie for the seat.
