Newly elected New Hyde Park Mayor Robert Lofaro has appointed Donna Squicciarino as trustee to fill his unexpired term on the village Board of Trustees.

A 16-year resident of the village, Squicciarino is a certified public accountant who works as the part-time district treasurer for the Sewanhaka Central High School District and the Mineola School District. She said she has worked for Sewanhaka for the past five years and for Mineola over the past seven years.

“I am a resident of the village and have come to know the village family in my personal dealings,” she said. “I really do respect what they do over there and I felt compelled to help.”

Lofaro, who was elected mayor on March 19, had resigned his position as trustee on April 1 with two years remaining in his term. He ran for mayor after longtime New Hyde Park Mayor Daniel Petruccio decided to not run for re-election. Lofaro appointed Squicciarino to the board at a village staff meeting on April 22.

Squicciarino said she had approached Lofaro about her interest in serving on the village board . She said she felt she could contribute to managing the business of the village based on experience with managing school district budgets.

Prior to her current roles in the local school districts, Squicciarino said she spent several years working for Fleet Securities and PriceWaterhouseCoppers.

She and her husband Joe have two sons attending elementary school at the Notre Dame School.

She cited public safety as her primary priority as she takes office.

“As a mother, my most important issue is the safety of our area and maintaining safety for our children,” Squicciarino said.

She said she has an interest in all aspects of life in the village.

“We have all had a common interest. I’m interested in everything the village does,” Squicciarino said.

In her free time, she said, she spends most of her time with her family.
