Six Tips for the Perfect Proposal

The Island Now

So you’ve found the person you want to spend the rest of your life with? Take a deep breath and congratulate yourself because finding “the one” is the hardest part. And now read on because we’ve got you covered on how to perfect that all-important question-pop!

1. Have the Talk

Okay technically this is a pre-step, but it’s important that you and your partner have had a conversation (or two) about marriage BEFORE you pop the question. This might sound like a total surprise-ruiner, but we’re not saying you have to divulge your whole plan! You just want to make sure that getting down on what knee isn’t your loved one’s first clue that you’re ready to take the next step.

2. Buy the Bling

This is probably the most expensive item on your proposal checklist, so it’s important to choose wisely when finding a jeweler. If you want the support of a team, check out engagement rings from Diamonds on Richmond. Their client managers can help you design a made-to-order ring your partner will love — and all within your budget. And if the responsibility of choosing the jewelry your honey will wear to the grave is just too much, ask about a “proposal ring.” You can use it to pop the question and then return to the shop to pick out the REAL thing together.

3. Get a Blessing… or Not?

Since you’ve already completed step one and had a conversation with your fiance-to-be about the possibility of marriage, you also hopefully have an idea by now of whether asking for the parents’ blessing is a must-do or a no-go. Some people would hate to think that their parents knew they were getting engaged before they did! Others think it’s archaic to ask permission. But for some people, this tradition is a really meaningful and essential part of joining the family. Make sure you know where your partner stands and plan accordingly. If you’re unsure, you could always go to the BFF or a sibling for advice!

4. Book the Spot

The place is so important here. Is your significant other someone who wants a flash mob in your favorite park, or someone who would be mortified by a public proposal? Remember that this moment is ultimately about you and your partner and go with a setting that feels special to your relationship. Think of your favorite restaurant, the place you first met, or even your own living room. With all the amazing proposal videos floating around the Internet, you might feel pressured to pull off an elaborate stunt — and if you’re up for that, go forth! But don’t underestimate the power of simplicity, especially in a situation where you’re likely to be at least a little nervous.

5. Consider the Capture

If it’s important to you or your significant other that the proposal moment is captured for posterity, make sure to plan ahead! You can recruit a friend or family member to hide in the bushes or hire a professional photographer to snap the big ask! If you’re proposing in your home, you could even strategically prop up a hidden phone or camera to film the whole thing while keeping it a private moment.

6. Find the Right Words

Ultimately, what your loved one will remember most is you asking them to marry you. Make sure you’ve thought about what you want to say ahead of time. Be honest and true to your relationship and the way you speak to one another. But once the time comes, remember to breathe and try to be in the moment as much as possible — it’ll be over before you know it!
