Sharks topple Long Beach Tidal Waves

The Merillon Sharks 10U beat the Long Beach Tidal Waves, 13-1, in six innings on Sunday at Merillon after an eight-run explosion in the second inning.

Merillon scored in the second on an RBI single by Luke Notine, a walk by James Prado, a groundout by Jimmy Weedon, and a two-run single by Aidan Scott.  James reached base three times in the game for the Sharks, scored two runs and had two RBIs.

Long Beach couldn’t get anything going so long as Ryan Wasserman was on the hill. The Tidal Waves managed just one hit off of the Shark’ starting pitcher, who allowed no earned runs, walked two and struck out 10 during his five innings of work.

Merillon never trailed after scoring two runs in the first on an RBI double by Ryan Wasserman and a groundout by Matty Heimowitz.

 

Boys Minors Division

The Stutzmann & Son Funeral Home/ Tudor Advisory Group Giants drop high-scoring affair to the SAI Insurance Pirates, 16-14

The Giants fell 16-14 to the Pirates in four innings on Saturday at Merillon despite racking up four hits and 14 runs.  Duhan Lee did his best to jump-start the offense for the Giants, reaching base three times, scoring three runs with one RBI and a first inning double. Duhan also pitched lights out for the Giants, holding the Pirates hitless over 1 2/3 innings, allowing no earned runs, walking none and striking out three.  

The Pirates were sparked by Kareff and Mattei, who teamed up for four hits and four RBIs.  The top of the first saw the Pirates take an early lead, 6-0. Kareff got things going for the Pirates with a single. A stolen base then moved Kareff to second. The Pirates added more runs when Mattei scored on an RBI single by Mauceri, Weedon scored on a passed ball, Mauceri scored on an error, Kunak scored on an RBI single by Gandhi and Depompeis scored on a groundout by Spagnoli.  The Giants scored six runs of their own in the first on an RBI double by Duhan, an RBI single by Ryan Wasserman, who then stole home, an RBI single by Garrett Roth, who also stole home, and a walk by John Dermezis. 

The Pirates didn’t relinquish the lead after scoring six runs in the second inning when they scored on a two-run error, a groundout by Weedon and an RBI single by Kareff.  After pushing across three runs in the bottom of the fourth, the Giants faced just a 16-14 deficit. A groundout by Garrett, a bases loaded walk by Brendan Cooper and a walk by Stephen Lopez triggered the Giants’ comeback. But Weedon got John Dermezis to strike out to end the game.

Dr. Thomas Barbaro Podiatry / Parker Jewish Institute Rays beat Stutzmann Funeral Home Giants, 17-4

The Dr. Thomas Barbaro Podiatry/Parker Jewish Institute Rays outslugged the Stutzmann Funeral Home/Tudor Advisory Group Giants, 17-4, on a beautiful evening for baseball at Merillon Field. Arjun Bhatt started his first game pitching for the Rays, going two innings and giving up only one run. Arjun also contributed with the bat, getting on base three times and scoring two runs. Marco Gullo was a strong lead-off hitter, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Luke Notine, who went 2-for-4, continued his base running feats, scoring from first base on an infield single. Scott McClellan’s on base percentage continued to climb, reaching base in all four of his at-bats, scoring all four times.

James Prado came in to relieve Arjun and pitched a sensational three innings, striking out six in only his second appearance on the mound this year. As usual, James added great offense too, going 3-for-3 and scoring four times. Sebastian Lennox smashed an RBI single and later scored as well. Josh Henderson hitting streak continued, going 1-for-1 and walking in his other two plate appearances. Vinay Patel got on base four times and scored one run.

Christian Flynn reached base via a walk and played solid defense wherever asked. Sanketh Kumar reached base once and ran the bases like a pro. Eagle eyed Alex Isopo got on base three times and scored twice. Anthony Agerenza and William Vasilakos were on the disabled list for the game. Feel better guys.

 

Boys Majors Division

Long Island Orthodontics Dr. Zadnik Merillon Ducks defeat the Hand Rolled Bagels Merillon Cyclones, 11-10

During a beautiful spring Saturday afternoon, the Long Island Orthodontics Dr. Zadnik Merillon Ducks defeated the Hand Rolled Bagels Merillon Cyclones, 11-10, in an epic battle. The two undermanned squads made the most of their increased playing time by having a slugfest. The Ducks attacked first by scoring six runs in their first at bat before tacking on another three runs to build a 9-0 lead. Once Cyclones got their second wind, they scored 10 runs to take a 10-9 lead. The Ducks weathered the storm and scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good.

Ibrahim Khwaja had another great day in the field. Ibrahim also smashed a double and scored a run. Adrian Balkcom was the hitting star of the game, going 4-for-4 with a double, a triple, three runs scored, three RBIs and two stolen bases. Adrian was also a warrior behind the plate, catching the entire game.  Mike Castelli played his best all-around game of the season, going 3-for-4, including a double, three stolen bases, two runs scored and one RBI. Mike also made a spectacular play at second in the last inning to help cement the victory. Brian Kornreich battled mightily at the plate and turned in a great force play in his debut at shortstop.  Abidin Dauti scored a run and had two huge hits, including a double to drive in the game-winning run. Abidin also struck out eight batters in three plus dominant innings on the mound. Jared Puntus had a great day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a triple and a run scored. Jared struck out one in an inning plus of relief.  A.J. DeVito had two hits, including a double, an RBI and two runs scored. A.J. struck out two batters in an inning plus, including a one, two, three sixth inning to earn his second win of the season. Nico Loguidice smashed a huge double to drive in three runs in the Ducks’ big first inning. Nico also scored a run and made contact in all four of his at bats demonstrating that a three hour practice does pay off.

 

Evolution Reality River Sharks vs, New Hyde Park Elks Lodge Bears

The Evolution Realty River Sharks battled the Bears at Merillon Field this past Saturday. Cenzo Montoni, Nick Levkulic and Anthony Steves contributed with their bats. Franco Dimilta, Aaron Minkow and Daniel Mattei played solid defense. James Dermezis continues to be a reliable backstop for the River Sharks. James caught the entire game and assisted two players making their River Sharks pitching debut navigate through a formidable Bears’ lineup. Daniel Loughlin stepped up on the hill and kept the Bears’ bats in check, tossing two strong innings.  To end game, the River Sharks unveiled sidearming closer Matt Merolla, who pounded the strike zone and baffled the opposing hitters.
