Readers Write: Repeal tax cap to preserve education quality

The Island Now

I am a parent in the East Williston School District who also happens to be the teachers’ association president. In both capacities I applaud the editorial position taken by the Williston Times.

The tax cap is a reality and it is a very grim reality; one which must be changed.

Historically, the East Williston schools have provided a well-rounded education where exceptional academics are supported by rich opportunities for the arts, extra-curricular activities, clubs, athletics and electives.

In a small school already operating on a very lean budget, the results of the tax cap have already been felt.

Last year the district cut its budget by more than $2 million to stay within the legal limits of the tax cap.  And this year, the continuation of the tax cap will necessitate additional cuts. Our children will lose.

The East Williston schools along with the many other public schools on the North Shore have forever been the crown jewels of education on Long Island. The tax cap must be changed in order to maintain the high quality of education we expect.

As you stated, the quality of our schools is vital to the quality of life on Long Island. Therefore the tax cap must be repealed.
