Community support for getting rid of old meds

The Island Now

On Sept. 17, the Great Neck Water Pollution Control District co-sponsored the Shed the Meds pharmaceutical take back event as an opportunity for the community to dispose unwanted and expired medications in an easy and environmentally safe manner.

The co-sponsors supporting this effort were Reach Out America, Great Neck Breast Cancer Coalition, North Shore Action, Nassau County Police Department, Northwell Health, and the Boy Scouts.

Some 107 cars dropped off their medications at the District “drive thru” and we collected approximately 400 pounds of medication. Each car received a pre-paid addressed envelope from the District to safely mail back medications throughout the year.

The outpouring of appreciation for having this event only solidified the opinion that this is a very needed service to the community and one which we will be repeating next year.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Steve Blank and the Great Neck News for their generosity and contribution of a full-page ad in their paper. Their commitment to our community clearly had a huge impact on our success.
