Readers Write: Transparency is fiction in Village of Great Neck

The Island Now

Mayor Bral, You were heavily quoted in this week’s local press.

You say: “We’re being more transparent than any other Great Neck Village would be.”

I say: “Local government that signs a Letter of Engagement for a significant and costly public works project, failing to disclose to the public for nine months – has issues with transparency.”

I say: “A village with an outstanding resident lawsuit for  1 1/2 years in Nassau County Supreme Court must have issues with transparency. Instead of amicably settling with the village resident early on, you have succeeded in draining a resident’s savings in excess of $50,000.” And it’s not over yet. What is this lawsuit costing village taxpayers?

The facts are… the real facts are… no administration (I know of) consistently goes to such extreme lengths to conceal information from the concerned public. In some instances we know of, residential homes have come down without proper permits. This village is engaged in a free-for-all. There must be something serious to hide. What are you hiding, Mayor Bral?

You cannot continue to deny the public access to the highly anticipated SEQRA study – making up your own rules, authorizing development even in the midst of an ongoing public challenge, simply because you do not desire public interference. As of 10 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, the evening of the latest Board of Trustees meeting, in a particularly vicious, hostile atmosphere, you gave orders for distribution of 20 copies of the wrong version or incomplete version of the actual SEQRA study for the Community Center on Steamboat Road. We are not naïve.

Good government, fair government, transparent and democratic government does not work this way.
