Readers Write: Rallies no place for bigotry, hate

The Island Now

As a member of this community for over 40 years, it saddens me greatly to see what has happened to it in the last few years. It seems that elections, both local and national, bring out such hateful comments and create a divisiveness that continues post-election as well. Once again, a few residents turned the focus of a political rally in our town on its ear.

Assumably the people cheering in and out of the cars were a part of the parade route to show their support, as is customary but just a few of the shouted remarks instead redirected any positivity to their personal messages of bigotry and divisiveness.

Going forward the next day proudly displaying a video on social media of these comments makes it more difficult to explain to our children just how offensive, hurtful and intolerable this behavior is.

One can only hope that after the election, we can once again try to repair the fracture that has taken place in our community.
