Readers Write: Park district under Ciluffo a model government

The Island Now

I say you gotta give it to Frank.  I truly believe the Great Necks Park District is, along with our (voted best in the state!) school district, a jewel in our peninsula’s crown.  And I think that jewel got a lot shinier when Frank Cilluffo joined the team.

First of all, I wish the Village of Great Neck’s government was as concerned with finding out what the community wants and then acting on it!

When the parks department wanted public input for their master plan, they advertised the meeting, and held it in the auditorium at North High School!

Plenty of room for all interested, with the parks commissioners finding out what people want and don’t want their tax money spent on over the next decade or so.

Frank & Co. are stepping into the void in planning that is all too apparent around these parts, such as tackling the overcrowded commuter problem, by working with Transdev, to get the G.N. buzz up and running; doing their best to create the kind of community we all want.

They understand the value of the Village Green as a central destination in the village.  I love the holiday lights at The Village Green; they really brighten up what can be a cold, gray time of year.

Likewise, the skating rink to be set up on the Green?  I love it!

Talk about destinations!  This is the kind of destination that folks from near- and far, will come to- this is the way to build a cool, happening village.  Now if there was just a small food court across from the Village Green, with three or four food kiosks…. (any developers listening out there?)

The parks department will bring in a farmer’s market, they’re open to offering space and assistance in setting up a community-sponsored agriculture program – they are doing all they can to create a destination, a village, a community– uniting, rather than dividing us.

I believe Frank Cilluffo has been the main driving force behind these moves, and I applaud him, I applaud the way the parks district is showing the way for village government to follow, and I heartily endorse him for another term as parks commissioner.
