Readers Write: Great understanding of Parkinson’s disease needed

The Island Now

An estimated 1 million people in the U.S. live with Parkinson’s disease, the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s.

Symptoms vary but include tremors, slowness of gait, difficulty in balance, swallowing, speaking and others.

April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month and I urge everyone to join our community as we promote greater awareness of how this relentlessly progressive disease affects patients and their families.

My wife suffers from this disease, and because of this I have become aware of many aspects of it beyond what I knew as a physician.

Since the disease is incurable, for now, quality of life can be immensely improved.

Support groups, newsletters – electronic or print – to exchange ideas about daily living, travel, selling or donation of used equipment and of course, funds for basic research.

Every patient with Parkinson’s disease suffering from movement disorder must be evaluated by a neurosurgeon with expertise in deep brain stimulation.
