Readers Write: College campus rape statistics sad but true

The Island Now

In the Sept. 29 issue of the Blank Slate Media newspapers, Lauren Block of Manhasset challenged my findings about rape on college campuses.

While I question her statements and her sources, I don’t want to get into the weeds on whose studies are valid and whose conclusions are logical.

However, I would be remiss if I didn’t cite the following.

One in five women and one in 71 men will be raped at some point in their lives.

This from the National Sexual Violence Resource Center.) Focusing in on college rapes, one in five women and one in sixteen men are sexually assaulted in college. (Same source.)

Even to Block, this should come as no surprise.

We live in a male-dominated culture, example, a president  who brags about “grabbing pussy.”

The upshot of this sad episode was that Billy Bush got fired and Donald Trump was elected president.

More data comes from the Center for Public Integrity (winner of two Pulitzer Prizes) which did a one year study on sexual assaults on campus.

Their conclusion — “Students found responsible for sexual assaults often face little or no punishment from school judicial systems while their victims lives are frequently turned upside down…”

This might explain  the underreporting of this heinous crime.

But my most irrefutable evidence is that only between 2 percent and 8 percent of rape charges brought against men on college campuses turn out to be true.

Block then argues that as a mother and grandmother she is “not comfortable with even the lowest number  of that range.”

As a father and grandfather myself, I, too, am not happy with even one innocent male being punished for a crime he did not commit.

But, here too, Block, conveniently, omits the source of my statistics.

As well she might,  since they come from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

So, maybe Ms. Block should be arguing, not with me, but with the F.B.I.

The one statement made by Block which I cannot refute is:

“Dr. Sobel despises President Trump…” Guilty as charged!

And why wouldn’t I loathe a misogynistic, xenophobic,  narcissistic, pathologically lying  man with a character disorder?
