Readers Write: Baxter House a safety threat

The Island Now

As residents of the Village of Baxter Estates, many of my neighbors and I have become increasingly concerned about the deteriorating safety of the area surrounding 15 Shore Drive (including the well travelled Central Drive), and alarmingly concerned when the government recent(ly) issued a forecast that the hurricane season, which begins next month, is expected to be particularly severe: both vehicles and pedestrians are in danger of severe injury by debris blown off the ruin by strong winds.

There is no questions that the condition of what remains after the Feb. 5 fire is thoroughly deplorable and a detriment to the welfare and good looks of the Village of Baxter Estates.

However, I view public safety as the most important factual issue, an issue that fully overrides anyone of the diverse, multifaceted opinions about the worth of the landmarked items of the property.

Hence, I was gratified by the action of the Trustees of the Village of Baxter Estates to order the immediate demolition of the ruin.

Then all non-residents and residents of the village can devote as much time as desired and express opinions (with substantial financial contributions, as appropriate) for the ensuing construction of the site — in compliance with laws, regulations, wishes and values.
