Old Westbury trustee, justice re-elected

Old Westbury residents Tuesday re-elected Trustee Elizabeth Greenberg and Village Justice Edward Jaochim to full, four-year terms at their respective positions, village officials said.

Jaochim received 78 votes and Greenberg received 77 votes in the two uncontested elections, and one write-in vote for trustee went to resident David Weiss, village officials said.

Greenberg, who was appointed in January to finish the term of her late husband, former Trustee Steven Greenberg, has also served on the village’s architectural review committee for the last nine years and has spent more than 30 years in the nursing field.

“My husband always thought it was important to be involved in the community,” Greenberg said Wednesday. “We had always felt we had a responsibility as citizens to be involved and attend board meetings and participate, so we’d sit in the back and listen. When we came to the board, we took our positions very seriously and fulfilled them to the best of our abilities as residents.”

An Old Westbury resident since 1999, Greenberg said she was proud to live in the village and grateful that her neighbors elected her, adding that she still planned to participate on the architectural review committee.

“I think [the Board of Trustees does] a great job and I think we need to continue what we’re doing in the manner in which our mayor [Fred Carillo] leads us, and I’m very honored to be with them,” Greenberg said. “We’re very empathetic to our residents and we spend a lot of time answering any questions and concerns they have.”

Joachim, an Old Westbury resident since 1964, has served as the village justice for the last 17 years. He is admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of the United States, the eastern and southern districts of the United States Federal Court and is a master arbitrator in federal courts.

Joachim, who could not be reached for comment, is also a member of the New York State Magistrates Association, the New York State Trial Lawyers Associations and a director of the Nassau Lawyers Association.
