Readers Write: No reason to oppose Dailey land subdivision

The Island Now

I have been asked by a neighbor to sign a petition being circulated by Brian Griffith through MoveOn.org.  It opposes the plan to subdivide into two lots the land owned by the Dailey family on the corner of Bellows Lane and Manhasset Woods Road.

I strongly oppose this petition and request that the Dailey application be approved. According to licensed surveyors, each of these proposed lots would exceed the minimum area required by the village zoning code and would be larger than the lots across the street from them on Manhasset Woods Road.

Munsey Park is famous for the strict standards of its building code and the need for approval by the Building Advisory Committee. The houses proposed would have to meet these criteria.  A “monstrosity” is most unlikely with these safeguards.

I have lived in Munsey Park for 50 years and have seen other homes built on then-vacant land. The lots on the corner of Manhasset Woods Road and Hunt Lane come to mind.

The house at 86 Abbey Road was built on an even steeper lot than the Dailey’s. It fits in completely with the surrounding homes.

I am sure the homes built on the Dailey land would also.

Besides, the developer is from the Denihan family which owns many lovely homes in the Manhasset area.  I am sure anything the Denihans would propose would become beautiful additions to Munsey Park.

While we would all love to see open space preserved, there was no buyer willing to buy the Dailey home with the extra land included.

We owe a debt of thanks to the Dailey family for paying taxes to preserve it for all of us to enjoy all these years.
