The New Hyde Park Little League Girls 11/12 year-old softball team moves to the Section 5 Championship game with a win over Rockville Centre LL, 14-1.
For the fourth straight game NHPLL batted around in the first inning, this time scoring seven first-inning runs.
Kayla Fitzpatrick led off with a triple, then scored on Melissa Ward’s single. Ann Grimshaw then singled in Jenny Hickey who had walked. Maggie Donnelly singled in Ward. Gabby Morales followed with a shot to center that was caught but special runner Katie Tubridy alertly tagged up to score the 4th run of the inning.
Sophia Jacoby singled in Donnelly to keep the rally going. Emma Nidermaier followed with a bunt single and Fitzpatrick finished off the inning with a single to plate two more runs and give NHPLL a commanding 7-0 lead.
That was much more than pitcher Hickey needed to get the win. Hickey pitched a complete game one hitter striking out eight while walking only one batter in a dominating performance.
