NHP Cheetahs topple Levittown Lady Tigers

The Island Now

The New Hyde Park GU13 Cheetahs were well prepared for their third game of the season and they got the results they were looking for with a 2-0 win against Levittown.

The early start didn’t affect the girls in any way as they piled up many quality chances in the first half. Their crisp passing kept Levittown on its heels, while the strong defensive play of Olivia Lappin, Paulina Papadoniou, Alicia Slavit and Cecelia Jozef smothered any chances the opponent may have had.

There was excellent goal tending by Olivia Burns, as she cut off the angles for shots taken by Levittown, as well as communicating with her defense when she had possession of the ball.

The Cheetahs had strong midfield play with great through passes from Brooke Christman, Victoria Cavallaro, Ellen O’Dwyer and Samantha Bravo.

The second half was more of the same with deep runs from Kassidy Keefe and Daniela O’Modie, who tested the keeper from both sides.  Eventually, the Cheetahs broke through with a barrage of shots, ending with a rocket off the foot of Alicia Slavit to the back of the net.

Breana Pellicane on left defense was super strong, clearing the ball up the field quickly.  With about 10 minutes left, Julia Rega scooped up the ball in the midfield and used her speed and agility to get another quality chance. The result was a goal to left corner.

The Cheetahs dominated the remainder of the game, bringing their record to 1-1-1 for the fall season.

The girls played in unison and it was an excellent effort from all. This was a real team win as the Cheetahs got contributions from everyone. One sad note, Samantha Bravo was taken out after a crushing elbow to the ribs. Fortunately, the X-rays showed no break, but a bad bruise will keep her out at least a week.

Juniors

Red Rockets 9, Green Tornados 9. It was another spectacular weekend for TOP soccer.  The Juniors had an enthusiastic offensive game, with all the players taking advantage of weak goalies and scoring at least two goals.  The Red Rockets’ Jesse Sarro put in two goals, one in each of the corner of the net, outwitting the goalie/Coach Mary Jo.

Bryan Roach of the Red Rockets played dynamite defense and came up from the defensive line to score two goals.  New players, Kyle and Jayden Marquardt, added two goals apiece for the Green Tornados.

Not to be outdone, guest player Sebastian Pinto from the Intermediates, completely dominated the field and gave the Red Rockets a boost with his own hat trick.  Lucas Mitacchione had a few breakaways and tore up the field for the Green Tornados and had three goals of his own.

David Cheung, playing midfield for the Green Tornados, provided many assists to his teammates and additionally blasted two goals past the goalie/Coach Katie.

Rounding out the field for the Red Rockets, midfielder Sean McWeeney dribbled down the left side of the field and scored.  Sean then tied the game by dribbling down the right side of the field and scoring again.  The Juniors used the entire soccer field to their advantage and had a great soccer day.

Intermediates

Green Team 2, Red Team 2. In preparation for next week’s New Hyde Park tournament, the Intermediates played an intense game on a large field.

Playing a tight defensive game for their respective teams, Kyle Hanratty, Nicholas Krieger, Alex Laroia, Elijah Kim and Demetri Georgedakis were stopping the offensive push from both teams and clearing the ball down the sidelines for midfielders Stephen Johnson and John Bertuccio.

Red team’s Petros D’Amico and Josh Hom scored for their team and Stephen DiBiasi and Matthew Lausev tied it up for the Green team.  The Intermediates look well prepared for their highly competitive games next week.

Seniors

Green Team 3, Red Team 3.  Tim Roth scored two goals for the Red team and Billy Russo added the third goal. The Red team’s Tristan Yang was unstoppable as a defender.

The Green Team’s strikers Justin Lim and Samuel Ho had a goal apiece.  The Red team midfielders Mary Glass, Samantha Duggan and Michael Raihl clogged up the center of the field which made it difficult for the Green team to create any offensive plays.

The Green team’s Harrison Stein, with a display of great dribbling, broke through the midfield and scored one goal and almost added another in the last few minutes of the game, but goalie, Sebastian Garcia was able to stop three back to back shots by Harrison in the closing minutes for the Red team.

The Seniors are ready to meet their Long Island opponents in next week’s tournament on Saturday Oct. 5.

The New Hyde Park Wildcats Soccer Club hosts this Tournament every fall at the Denton Avenue School.  It is expected that approximately 100 athletes from various clubs on Long Island will join the fun.
