Lynyrd Skynrd to play Westbury Aug. 15

The Island Now

Southern rock legends Lynyrd Skynyrd will be performing at the NYCB Theatre at Westbury on Thursday, Aug. 15.

With a catalog of over 60 albums, sales beyond 30 million worldwide and their classic American rock anthem “Sweet Home Alabama,” Lynyrd Skynyrd is a cross-generational cultural icon.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famers’ numerous rock classics include “Free Bird,” “Saturday Night Special,” “That Smell,” “Gimme Three Steps,” “What’s Your Name” and “Simple Man.”

The story of Skynard could have ended in a Mississippi swamp with the infamous 1977 plane crash that killed three band members, Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines.

Since then, the band has lost vital players in Billy Powell, Ean Evans, Allen Collins, Leon Wilkeson and Hughie Thomasson, yet their live stage performances and latest recordings are as potent as ever.

Currently led by core members Gary Rossington (guitar), Johnny Van Zant (vocals) and Rickey Medlock (guitar), Skynyrd recently recorded an album that continues to build on the legacy that began over 35 years ago in Jacksonville, Fla.

The band’s latest offering, “Last of a Dyin’ Breed,” was released on Aug. 21, 2012 and became their highest debuting album on the Billboard Top 200 since 1977. The album finds Skynyrd at the top of their game, with instantly memorable songs and a blistering three-guitar attack.

“Last Of A Dyin’ Breed” re-ignites the in-studio chemistry the band found with producer Bob Marlette, and the sound is traditional Skynyrd with an edge of immediacy.

The concert is at 8 p.m. Tickets are $40.50 to $60.50 plus applicable service charges and are available now online at www.ticketmaster.com, charge by phone at 800-745-3000 or at the Westbury box office.  Event, date and time are subject to change.
