Learn to read medical results

The Island Now

A free forum will be held on the evening of Wednesday, Nov. 9 at Adelphi University in Garden City, where among the topics discussed will be how to interpret medical results.
The forum will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Alumni House at Adelphi University, 154 Cambridge Ave. in Garden City.
The speaker, Dr. Mitchell A. Adler, is chief medical informatics officer for Northwell Health Physician Partners, where he oversees the ambulatory electronic health record, also known as Allscripts TouchWorks, according to a press release by Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program.
Before coming to Northwell, Adler was a founding partner of the Murray Hill Medical Group, where he helped implement an electronic medical record system in 1998 — which led to his practice becoming paperless several years later.
“We feel that when people know how to read their records they are better advocates for their health,” Erin Nau, the educational coordinator at the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program said.
Adler attended medical school at New York University and received his post-graduate training at the New York University Medical Center and Bellevue Hospital, where he completed a three-year residency in internal medicine followed by one year as chief resident.
He also attended law school at Fordham, was admitted to the New York Bar, and earned a master’s degree in public health from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health.
He served a four-year tenure as a member of the American College of Physician’s Medical Informatics Committee.
At Northwell Health, he is also a member of the Division of Medical Ethics and an active member of the ethics committee.
Seating is limited and pre-registration is required.
