Members of John Lewis Childs School’s Student Council are leading an ongoing collection for the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island in New Hyde Park.
Under the direction of adviser Kelly Zullo, the Student Council has been collecting items for the organization since September, with help from a Kindness Tree that was stenciled on the wall in the school’s main hallway.
The Kindness Tree features small paper bags that include leaves with suggested items for donation. For the past several months, students and families throughout the building have been donating items, such as dishwashing detergent, canned vegetables, cleaning supplies and paper goods.
“We stress the importance of being kind with our students,” Ms. Zullo said. “By undertaking this project, we are reinforcing that message and showing them how important it is to help those in need and give what we can to families struggling. Our school is so proud to support the Ronald McDonald House and, as they affectionately call it, ‘The House That Love Built.’”
The Student Council sorted all of the collected items and brought them to the Ronald McDonald House on Nov. 15. During their visit, Joanne Wolfring, a retired teacher from the district and Ronald McDonald House volunteer, led students on a tour of the facility. The school plans to continue collecting items for the organization throughout the remainder of the school year.
