Congregation Tifereth Israel in Glen Cove Marks the 90th birthdays of Anne Frank and Dr. Martin Luther King

Glen Cove’s Congregation Tifereth Israel will marks the 90th birthdays of Anne Frank and Dr. Martin Luther King with a special production in January.

Based on thoughts and ideals expressed in “The Diary of Anne Frank” and “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” professional actors will portray Anne Frank and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in an imagined meeting of these two legendary advocates for tolerance and peace, each of whom would have been 90 years old in 2019.

The theatrical performance of “Letters from Anne and Martin” will take place at Congregation Tifereth Israel at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 20. Members of the public are invited to join in this free event.

In presenting “Letters from Anne and Martin,Congregation Tifereth Israel, under the leadership of Rabbi Irwin Huberman and Cantor Gustavo Gitlin, has partnered with Rev. Roger Williams of The First Baptist Church of Glen Cove and Rev. Craig Wright of the Calvary A.M.E. Church in Glen Cove to present this program dedicated to diversity, respect and the strengthening of interfaith bonds.

The events of the day begin at 2:30 p.m. with a March of Unity from Calvary A.M.E. Church on Cottage Row to Congregation Tifereth Israel on Hill Street. This march pays homage to the 1965 march from Selma to Montgomery when King and Rabbi Abraham Joshua Herschel linked arms as they marched. Congregants and parishioners from Congregation Tifereth Israel, The First Baptist Church and Calgary A.M.E. Church will walk together with their spiritual leaders at the forefront.

Following the performance of “Letters from Anne and Martin,” the production’s actors will lead a Q & A and refreshments will be served.

Members of the community are encouraged to join in the events of this very special day. Admission is free; reservations are not needed.

Congregation Tifereth Israel is located at 40 Hill Street in Glen Cove, at the intersection of Hill Street and Landing Road. For more information, 516-676-5080 or visit ctionline.org.
