Readers Write: History makes Mexicans at home in U.S.

The Island Now

One notices the names in the southern U.S. such as St. Augustine, Miami, Fla., El Paso, San Antonio, Rio Grande, Amarillo, Los Angeles, Colorado, California and on and on.

A person from Mexico instantly feels very much at home here.

Why not? Those areas were annexed by force and made part of the U.S.

Ideologically, Mexico and the U.S. are quite in harmony and in other ways congenial. This is not to say that there are not groups in the U.S. that are separatists and do not like their fellow citizens.

From the beginning, there were groups here whose intent has been to lead an isolated existence. They are however not the majority and we know who they are.

Many of them are bent on running the U.S. as befits their narrow intentions. Some of them are presently holding up immigration reform.

It appears that the entire problem with immigration is caused by the deeds of some of our fellow citizens.

Allow that I explain. The intent of our law is such that no one may be provided with employment unless they, the receivers, are documented to receive it legally.

Were that strictly adhered to, there would be no reason to come here except for a visit or go to school. They would eventually need to leave for financial reasons.

As it stands, many are given work for less than the law requires and without benefits. These employers are betraying the rest of us unlawfully for their own private gain and the taking of work from those authorized to receive it. This is not news.

We all know about it. Should there be an actual shortage of certain labor and skills, the government would manage the system of authorizing those to fill the needs and any applicants would be welcome to apply for it.

Appropriate taxes would cover the cost of any administration.

Those who have lived here a sufficient amount of time should be allowed to become citizens especially those with children who were born here. If everyone obeyed the law, the border problem would be solved. Those who are cheating and corrupting a workable system must be prosecuted. Then some day perhaps we could get rid of that border. Anyone bereft of proper documentation would then do well not to leave their country. Simple enough?

Much commerce passes back and forth across that border on a daily basis. There are jobs in Mexico too as a result of it. People could then also freely move across the border as is the case with Canada. Just have the proper documents.

Last but not least: Regarding the article by Bing Tang “Jesus’ message trumps church,” Williston Times, Friday, July 12.

It is said that Christ opened the door for all who will. Anyone may stand tall and clean in the privacy of themselves and reach up to Him.

No need to kiss a ring or any other thing or bear the touch of another human being.
