Gun-lock proposal takes safety too far

The Island Now

I read Mr. Samek’s letter on gun-safety locks and understand his concern for the need to safely secure firearms in peoples homes.

However, the idea that there should be “government spot checkers” randomly knocking on peoples doors saying “let me see your registered weapons now” is disturbing.

He also writes that one would never know when that call might come.

Imagine getting that knock on your door at 3:00 in the morning because the “Government Spot Checkers” couldn’t get you at home during the day because you work for a living.

It appears that legal gun owners are always the target of gun legislation and that the criminal element who commit the vast majority of gun crimes are ignored.

Why not have “Government Spot Checkers” knock on peoples doors to see that their kitchen knives, baseball bats and clubs are safely secured.

According to FBI stats these along with hands and feet are among the top five  instruments used to commit murders in the United States.
