These students are among 16,000 nationwide to be named semifinalists, representing less than one percent of high school seniors in the United States. About 1.5 million juniors in more than 22,000 U.S. high schools entered the 2019 National Merit Program by taking the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). These scholastically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,400 Merit Scholarship awards that will be awarded next spring.
