Village of Williston Park Mayor Paul Ehrbar opened the Board of Trustees meeting on Monday by addressing the recent tragedy at a military base in Chattanooga, Tenn., where four Marines were killed and fifth fatally wounded by a 24-year-old gunman with an assault rifle.

“I feel like I do this too often,” said Ehrbar. “It’s just a terrible thing.”

The mayor then asked for a moment of silence before moving to other business.

Last week, Ehrbar ordered that the flags at the Village Hall be flown at half-mast in honor of the servicemen.

On July 16, the village hosted a free concert at Kelleher Field.

According to Ehrbar more than 600 people came to see tribute band Jimmy Kenny and the Pirate Beach Band.

“I think everybody had a great time,” said Deputy Mayor Kevin Rynne. “Everything was paid for by our recreation committee through fundraising.”

Rynne used the event as a way to bring awareness to the village’s email notification service.

By emailing notifications@villageofwillistonpark.org, people will automatically be enrolled and will be receive news and information through email regarding community events.

“I would strongly suggest to find out about future concerts or about family fun day or our night against crime, for all that we send an email out,” said Rynne. “It’s something you really should find out about and get involved with.”

During the public comments portion of the meeting, Williston Park resident Janine Klein raised concerns over the road conditions on Hillside Avenue.

“It’s in terrible shape,” she said.

According to Mayor Ehrbar, New York State has not repaved Hillside Avenue since 2004.

“It’s 10 years-old and it’s horrendous,” Ehrbar said. “But I don’t know but I’ll be checking on that to see what [the state’s] plans are.”
