Ruling on Sumter house fate rescheduled

A court hearing scheduled for April 21 that was expected to determine the fate of a home 8 Sumter Ave. in East Williston has been rescheduled to May 12, Village of Mineola attorney Jeffrey Blinkoff said.

Blinkoff said Nassau Supreme Court Judge James McCormack was unavailable to hear the case.

In March, McCormack had given house owners John and Theresa Muzio 30 days to give the court a reason for the house to not be taken down.

Blinkoff said McCormack told the Muzios they must present arguments to counter evidence in support of demolition from a recent inspection of the premises conducted by the village or provide proof of a deal to sell the property.

The abandoned house at 8 Sumter Ave. has been a source of recurrent complaints from residents for several years over health, safety and aesthetic concerns, including the presence of raccoons living in the home.
