Dervish delivers traditional Irish music on March 1

The Island Now

Worldwide favorite Dervish will bring traditional Irish music to Adelphi’s Performing Arts Center on Friday, March 1. For more than 25 years, the six-member group has impressed audiences around the globe with their live performances and 12 studio and live albums.

Dervish is made up of some of Ireland’s finest traditional musicians and is fronted by Cathy Jordan, one of the country’s best-known singers. The group has been described by the BBC as “an icon of Irish music,” has played at festivals from Rock in Rio to Glastonbury in England and has toured with Ireland’s president.

Dervish frequently tours throughout the U.S., where their concerts are often sold out, as well as in Europe, Asia, South America and Australia. They have been on the same bill as such artists as James Brown, Neil Young, Sting and Iron Maiden.

All six members of Dervish are steeped in the musical traditions of counties Sligo and Leitrim in Ireland’s Northwest. Shane Mitchell (accordion), Liam Kelly (flute/whistle), Brian McDonagh (mandola/mandolin) and Michael Holmes (bouzouki) are original members from the group’s earliest days in 1989. Singer Jordan, who also is a bodhran (drum) player, joined in 1991, and Tom Morrow (fiddle) became part of the group in 1998.

Dervish’s new album, The Great Irish Songbook, will be released in April and the group will be performing some selections from it during their Adelphi appearance.

Dervish’s March 1 show will begin at 8 p.m. on the Westermann Stage in the Adelphi PAC Concert Hall, 1 South Ave. in Garden City.
