Northwell Health-GoHealth Urgent Care encourages people to rethink their celebrations amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Connecting with family and friends over Thanksgiving is an American tradition. But this year Northwell Health-GoHealth Urgent Care encourages people to rethink their celebrations amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Avoid having gatherings of any size – opt for online or virtual celebrations instead,” said Dr. J.D. Zipkin the chief medical officer at GoHealth Urgent Care. “In an ideal world, no gathering is best.”
And for families that still plan to meet up, Zipkin recommends certain precautions, starting with the guest list.
“Choose to be around those who have 100-percent quarantined,” he said.
There are a host of additional practices to incorporate that may be new to some New Yorkers. There’s the mask-wearing, and frequent hand-washing/sanitizing, of course. And while outdoor gatherings are safer because of the air circulation, should people head indoors, there are additional measures to consider.
“Be mindful of things that can track germs into homes, such as shoes,” Zipkin said. “Take shoes off right at the entryway.”
Those gathering should avoid public transportation, he said.
Even the way we serve food must be rethought. Rather than serve food family style, have one person serve portions with a clean fork or spoon onto plates.
“That way everyone avoids sharing and touching the same utensils,” Zipkin said.
Tweaks to our holidays may seem challenging in a pandemic.
But, Zipkin said, “We will be able to fight this virus better if we’re willing to give up the traditions we love for a short period of time.”
