Carle Place/Wheatley lose in finals

The Island Now

The Seaford Vikings defeated the Carle Place/Wheatley Wild-Frogs 20-0 in the Conference IV Championship game Saturday afternoon at Hofstra University, led by Danny Roell’s two touchdown performance.
Roell rushed for 190 yards and Seaford’s defense silenced Carle Place’s running game to win the conference finals.
Carle Place/Wheatley head coach Tim Moran said the loss was hard to swallow but he gave credit to Seaford and their physicality.
“We knew they were going to be physical and we had to bring our A game,” Moran said. “We had to play hard nose football against them. I tip my cap to those guys.”
Seaford scored the game’s opening touchdown with 10:10 remaining in the first quarter. Roell’s 23-yard run capped off a 57-yard drive and Josh Pinnock’s kick gave Seaford a 7-0 lead.
With 4:09 remaining in the second quarter, Seaford scored again on a one-yard run by Nick Calandra to complete a 72-yard drive.
However, the extra point attempt was blocked and Seaford took a 13-0 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter, Seaford attempted to put the game out of reach with 2:03 remaining. Quarterback A.J. Cain threw a pass that was intercepted by Luke Caliendo and Carle Place/Wheatley had a chance to get on the board inside Seaford’s 32-yard line.
Cain made up for his turnover with an interception of his own off Carle Place quarterback Chris Kelly with 25 seconds remaining in the third.
In the fourth quarter, Roell’s four-yard dash gave Seaford another touchdown with 3:37 left to play and Pinnock’s kick sealed the deal as Seaford went on to win 20-0.
Moran said this season will go down as one of his most memorable moments as Carle Place and Wheatley have made their first conference final appearance since they merged programs ten seasons ago.
“We were just looking to get better than the year before and we did that by taking it two steps further,” Moran said. “We did what we wanted to do and it was a great run by the kids and the coaching staff.”
