Buckley campus closed; school open for learning

The Island Now

Despite the fact that school buildings throughout New York State have been closed since mid-March, Buckley Country Day School in Roslyn has continued its mission of Opening The Eyes And Awakening The Mind.

On March 17, Buckley launched its virtual learning plan using the Google Meet platform at all grade levels. All teachers and students had received training on the platform in early March and were more than ready to implement a new way of teaching and learning.

Thanks to the school’s expert faculty, over the past weeks Buckley students have received the same high-quality, rigorous education that they have become accustomed to. Only the delivery method for that education has changed.

“I cannot begin to tell you how fortunate I feel knowing that our faculty will be helping our community, our students in particular, continue to learn and preserve some sense of normalcy and optimism during these extraordinarily uncertain times,” Headmaster Jean-Marc Juhel wrote to the Buckley families. “Our goal is to provide a learning experience that is as engaging and as rich as that our students would enjoy if they were in our building and to help them remain connected to their teachers and their peers for as long as we are not able to re-open our doors. We will continue to re-imagine school events that our students look forward to every year so they can still enjoy them.”

Once it was clear that school would be closed for a longer period of time, Buckley adjusted the students’ schedules to closely replicate its typical comprehensive schedule. All students at Buckley, from Toddler through Eighth Grade, are now getting a full slate of classes, including all of the core subjects, art, music, and physical education.

“We are continually impressed with the authenticity of the remote learning Buckley is providing,” said a Buckley parent. “Our son continues to learn new content daily and feels entirely connected to his teachers and classmates, as we do to the community.”

On Wednesday, April 22, Buckley will be holding a virtual Open House from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. Families will hear from Dr. Juhel, get a virtual tour of the school building, virtually visit various classes in real-time, and hear from current students.
