Readers Write: Blame teachers, not Mangano on taxes

The Island Now

Why are we blaming Ed Mangano for our recent tax sticker shock? I object to Tom Suozzi’s statement, “The Mangano Tax.”

Suozzi had eight years and did nothing to reduce school taxes. Each year we got an increase. In fact, for the past 37 years my school tax has gone up, so let’s not put the blame entirely on Mangano.

I for one, like many other homeowners, was glad to challenge my assessment. It gave many the choice to either stay or leave Nassau County.

Yes other taxes have gone up each year, the county tax, for one, but we use the road, police, street cleaning, fire departments, storm management, tree clearing and the many other programs for seniors and veterans all year long.

We expect to pay for these amenities. But then we have our village tax, park district tax, library tax, sewer tax… thank goodness for the 2 percent cap or Long island would be left to the rich or the poor, the middle class extinct.

So who is really to blame for the hundreds of dollars increase each year on our property tax bill?

I blame the schools, the teachers union and school administrators. Why do we need 53 superintendents for 1 million people, when New York City has one for 8 million, and why so many assistant superintendents?

Why is there a multimillion dollar (could be much higher) industry for online courses – golf basics or “I’m So Stressed I Could Scream”.

Any credit count for teachers to quickly, dramatically increase their pay.

Read, “How Long Island teachers benefit from unusual raise system” by Sandra Peddie at Newsday.com. You might want to scream.

We need to look into superintendents salaries and benefits, particularly retirement benefits. We should not be forced to pay for their health insurance and pensions for life.

Teachers in Nassau County earn enough to pay for their own, especially as they only work part time, 189 days and have off 176 days a year. Many take second jobs, coaching or tutoring during this paid free time.

And why do we pay for six dinners in the Great Neck School District. They call them 6 o’clock meetings at taxpayer expense. Can’t they meet after 3 p.m. school, then go out to eat.

At least Ed Mangano’s wife bakes the cupcakes for the seniors got-to gathers.

School taxes should not be an increasing expense for seniors with no children in the school system to stay in their homes. So please put the blame for those increases where they belong.
