Readers Write: Women don’t have right to their own bodies

The Island Now

Do pro-lifers ignore “complicated circumstances?”  Possibly.

But, let’s address that criticism by Dr. Hal Sobel as best we can.

First, let’s give credit where it is due.

Most high school debaters know what Dr. Sobel has yet to learn.

One shows the shallowness of his arguments when he resorts to name calling and attempted put downs of an opponent as a substitute for logic.  (Attack the message, not the messenger.)

Some say women have the right to do what they want with their own bodies.

But, the state says otherwise.

Women are not allowed to commit suicide, to scar themselves with knife wounds, to sell their bodies to a neighbors’ husbands or sons, to lie down on active train rails, to have sex with minors, etc.

If women aren’t allowed to seriously hurt themselves, why should they be allowed to torture  to death the body of another person whether it be a son or a daughter?

Let’s explore a “complicated circumstance” with Dr. Sobel, the self confessed “relativist.”

In 1937 my family had nothing but praise for our German-American building superintendent.  He kept everything in our building super clean and in good working condition despite having a mentally ill wife.

Even though there was little traffic on the roads in 1937, we were all concerned for the safety of the super’s wife as she waved down cars and begged for car rides.

Then, as now, America had no good solution for dealing with mental illness.

But, in Germany, there were relativists who thought like Dr. Sobel.

So, my super took his wife back to Germany for a death cure.  And he came back with a blonde cousin who married him and settled in as our assistant building manager.

I was only a young boy at the time; but, I was wise enough to understand that the German relativists of the 1930s had the wrong answers.

And today, it doesn’t take a genius to realize that there is something wrong with the brandishing of a doctorate to justify thoughtless arguments hiding behind a barrage of insults.
