The 11th annual Tom Zangas Memorial Lung Cancer Foundation/Archangel Michael Church 5K Run/1K Walk, which has raised nearly $400,000 for lung cancer research, is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 27, at 9:30 a.m. The race will be held at North Hempstead Beach Park in Port Washington. Applications are now being accepted and are available at www.elitefeats.com?AMC5K.

The race honors the memory and fight for life of Tom Zangas, a triathlete and marathoner who died from lung cancer in 2011 at the age of 40. Proceeds from the race go to the foundation and to Archangel Michael Church of Port Washington.

The Tom Zangas Memorial Lung Cancer Foundation was founded by Tom’s parents, Leonard and Penelope Zangas of Manhasset, to honor Tom’s memory and raise funds to fight lung cancer. Among the institutions receiving grants are Yale University, Perlmutter Cancer Center at NYU Langone Health and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. The grants have funded several areas of research including testing of novel lung cancer therapies.

The entry fee for the race is $35. It is free for those 12 and under. Runners will compete in several age categories. Each participant will receive a t-shirt and a photo of their finishing the race.

Individual or corporate sponsorships are available. For more information contact Leonard Zangas at 516-504-7000 or visit the foundation website at tomsinpiration.org.
