WP Rotary pays Lady Liberty a visit on cruise

Members of the Williston Park Rotary club recently headed to the Port Washington Town Dock to board the Majestic Princess and take a cruise around the city.

The Majestic Princess headed out of Manhasset Bay past the Stepping Stones Lighthouse in the Long Island Sound heading west under the Throgs Neck and Whitestone bridges, past LaGuardia Airport, Riker’s Island and through Hells Gate.

As we headed south down the East River under all the bridges to the foot of the Statue of Liberty, we enjoyed the sights and lights of the New York City skyline. At night from the water, you get a breathtaking perspective of the city. Our captain pointed out many places of interest as we sailed down the river.

Rotary club members enjoyed cold libations and a wonderful meal as we took in the sights. On the front deck, members enjoyed the views while those on the upper deck were dancing to the sounds of the DJ. There was no doubt that everyone on board had a fantastic time.

We were literally a few hundred feet from the base of the Statue of Liberty. Patriotic songs were played over the loudspeaker as people just listened and stared at this beautiful symbol of our freedom.

As the vessel turned around and headed back to Port Washington, members danced the night away while dessert and coffee was served inside. Others sat in the front and enjoyed the splashing waves against the bow.

Most Rotary functions are dedicated to raising funds for a specific purpose or charity but in this case, members just enjoyed each other’s company.

Many thanks to Rotary President Karen Wiley and a special thank you to Commodore James Daw of East Williston for arranging the evening’s festivities. There is no doubt that we all look forward to next year’s excursion.
