The passenger of an allegedly drunk motorist who crossed four lanes of traffic and flipped his vehicle in Old Westbury early Sunday was hospitalized for head and internal injuries that Nassau County police said are considered life-threatening.
The passenger, identified as a 28-year-old woman, was taken to Winthrop-University Hospital for treatment, police said.
Police said the motorist, Steven M. Bevilacqua, 29, of Commack, was treated for head and lower abdominal injuries at Nassau University Medical Center.
A police spokesman declined to provide an update of their medical status Monday.
Police said that as Bevilacqua was driving eastbound along at 4:10 a.m. the Long Island Expressway in Old Westbury, he crossed four lanes of traffic near the overpass for Post Road, struck a guardrail and went down an embankment.
When police and fire personnel arrived at the site of where Bevilacqua crashed the 2003 GMC Envoy he was operating, they found him and the female passenger still inside.
Bevilacqua has been charged with third-degree assault and driving with ability impaired by alcohol and will be arraigned upon his release from the hospital, police said.
