Williston Park’s proposed water rate for EW is fair

The Island Now

I have been following the issue of the water charges to East Williston. I would like to state a few things from the newspaper about this matter.

The residents of Williston Park pay $3.47 per 1,000 gallons for water.

East Williston is presently paying Williston Park 3.83 per 1,000 gallons for water

That is approximately 10 percent more that what the residents of Williston Park are paying.

There is to be a rate increase to East Williston to 4.41 per 1000 gallons of water.

Here are my questions.

Will the rate of water increase for the residents of Williston Park because of an increase in water rates.  Is this why the water rate is being raised for East Williston?

It was stated in the Williston Times that there was a increase last April from @2.99 to $3.83 for the price of water per 1,000 gallons to East Williston.

The residents of Williston Park have been paying $3.47 per 1,000 gallons since 2007.

That means we were picking up the tab for East Williston for quite a few years.

How neighborly is that?

Does East Williston have a contract with Williston Park for water?

If the cost of water services is going to increase due to a rate increase then they should pay the new rate.

The Dvirka & Bartolucci report also states the minimum cost of water services to East Williston for the current fiscal year should be $546,525.43.  What happens if this is incorrect and in fact is $601000.00.  Where does that leave us?  Picking up the tab again for East Williston?  If the water services are less then you can always issue a reduction in water rates for the next year.

There are always costs involved in supplying another municipality with services and 10 percent is not too much to ask for a surcharge.
