Walters, Barnes named to Weekly Honor Roll

The SUNY College at Old Westbury had players from both the men’s and women’s basketbal teams named to the Skyline Conference Weekly Honor Roll this week, the school announced Monday. 

Men’s junior guard Reynaldo Walters has been named to the Weekly Honor Roll, released by league officials in Monday’s report for games played February 2-8, having previously earned Player of the Week honors on February 2 and January 5.

The South Ozone Park native averaged 17.6 points, 3.3 assists, 1.5 steals while shooting 48.6 percent from the field (18-37) and 45.4 percent from three-point territory (5-11).

Walters opened the week on February 3 with a game-high 21 points in Old Westbury’s 69-68 loss to St. Joseph’s (L.I.).  Walters then followed with 14 points and four assists in a 78-68 setback at Mount Saint Vincent on February 5. 

Walters closed out the week by scoring 18 points to lead all scorers in Old Westbury’s 68-48 victory against Yeshiva on February 7, also contributing five assists, four rebounds and three steals in the conference win at home over Yeshiva.

On the season, Walters is averaging 15.6 points, 3,1 assists, 2.3 rebounds and 1.7 steals while connecting on 45.2 percent from the floor and 45.9 percent from beyond the arc.  

Sophomore forward Crystal Barnes also claimed a spot on the women’s Weekly Honor Roll for the fourth time this season. The Brooklyn native averaged 12.0 points, 13.5 rebounds, 2.0 blocks and 1.0 steals in two games last week. 

Barnes racked up 16 points, 17 rebounds (tying a career-high), two blocks and one steal to post her ninth double-double of the season in leading the Panthers to a 72-54 victory over St. Joseph’s (L.I.) on February 3.  Barnes closed out the week on February 5 against Mount Saint Vincent with eight points, 10 rebounds, two blocks and one steal. 

On the season, Barnes leads the conference with 2.6 blocks and 4.9 offensive rebounds per game and ranks among the conference leaders in rebounding (2nd, 11.3 rpg), defensive rebounding (4th, 6.4 rpg), field goal percentage (3rd, 44.2 percent) and scoring (T-14th, 10.7 ppg).
