Readers Write: Vote “Yes” for PW school budget

The Island Now

On Tuesday, May 15, our community will vote on the proposed 2018-19 School Budget. We encourage all residents of Port Washington to VOTE YES.

It is imperative that we all go to the polls and vote in support of the proposed budget. We must come together to vote for the future of our children and our community.

The proposed budget addresses the needs of our growing enrollment and stays within the tax cap while maintaining the high quality education for which Port Washington is known. This year, our school district has worked hard to put forth a budget that stays within the 3.15% Tax Levy Increase and gives us much of the additional staffing we need.

We are very excited as the proposed budget includes additional teachers and staff — both to help meet the enrollment growth and to keep smaller class sizes in our schools. The budget adds: one sixth grade teacher at Weber; one bilingual K teacher, if needed; one elementary special education teacher at Salem; one associate administrator of literacy, Grades 3-6; one high school teacher (math); and staff in world language at Weber.

The budget also preserves all current extracurricular activities, clubs, athletic programs and teams. The school budget vote and board election will take place on Tuesday, May 15, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., at Weber Middle School on Campus Drive. All registered voters are eligible to vote. Please join us in voting YES for the school budget. Your vote does matter!
